Kvaser Technical Associate, RT-Labs, brings deep experience in real-time software middleware and Ethernet communication protocols to industrial control systems.
In a recent collaboration with Kvaser, RT-Labs helped a global industrial tools manufacturer connect a large installed base of CAN-based tools to a new generation of Ethernet-enabled controllers. Rather than pursuing a full system redesign, the team delivered a modular, pre-certified OEM solution built on Kvaser’s proven hardware (see more below) and RT-Labs’ software stack.
By leveraging their real-time operating system (RT-Kernel), industrial network drivers, and middleware, the project moved efficiently from concept to production. The result was a CAN-to-Ethernet bridge that supports legacy accessories — such as stack lights, I/O expanders, and operator panels — while enabling remote firmware updates and integration with modern networks.
“The architecture is flexible enough to be adapted for robotics, smart agriculture, and even energy systems,” notes Marcus Ekerhult, RT-Labs’ Chief Marketing Officer. “Anywhere legacy CAN meets Ethernet, there’s potential.”
Looking ahead, RT-Labs is expanding support for additional industrial protocols, including Profinet and EtherNet/IP. “The goal is to make it even easier for manufacturers to modernize without overhauling their entire infrastructure,” Marcus adds.
Whether you’re upgrading legacy systems or preparing for the next generation of industrial platforms, RT-Labs offers a dependable path forward, built on proven tools and thoughtful design. Find out more about RT-Labs here.
