New Kvaser DBC Editor simplifies CAN database management

Kvaser has launched DBC Editor 7, a new software tool for creating, editing, and validating DBC files for CAN networks.

DBC files turn raw CAN traffic into readable signal names, values, and units. DBC Editor helps users maintain these definitions for testing, diagnostics, and CAN analysis. The same message and signal definitions can also be reused in other software, including CanKing 7, Kvaser’s free CAN and LIN bus analysis software.

Create and validate DBC files

DBC Editor brings DBC editing and validation into one graphical interface for development, integration, testing, and diagnostics. A built-in database consistency check helps identify problems before a DBC file is used in other applications.

The check also helps keep message and signal definitions consistent across testing, analysis, and diagnostics. The editor supports extended multiplexed signals for defining and maintaining more complex CAN message structures.

Understand CAN signal layouts

Bit position visualization shows where signals are located within a CAN message, and how the available bits are allocated. This visual overview makes message layouts easier to understand without relying on numerical bit positions.

Use the same DBC definitions in CanKing 7

DBC files created or updated in DBC Editor 7 can be used in CanKing 7 for monitoring and analyzing CAN traffic.

Using the same message and signal definitions across both applications keeps the DBC file consistent from validation through CAN analysis. Validated definitions also support consistent interpretation during troubleshooting and analysis.

Work with DBC files on Windows and Linux

DBC Editor 7 is available for Windows and Linux, giving users flexibility across different development environments. Linux installations require the Kvaser CANlib SDK.

Users can choose between dark and light modes, and the application supports multiple languages.
