Faar Industry, a French company specialising in embedded systems development that is a Kvaser Technical Associate and Qualified Sales Representative, is now offering what it describes as a “fully autonomous driving platform” that OEMs, research labs and start-ups can use to test and validate their autonomous driving-related technologies or services. The full software and hardware platform comprises an architecture based on certified ECUs; brake, throttle, shift and steer by wire; power braking, custom braking for autonomous vehicles.

Faar commercialises robotic vehicle platform for testing autonomous technologies or services
Whilst the autonomous system was developed on a Renault Twizy – an inexpensive test subject that is ideal for start-up company budgets – Faar’s engineering team have plenty of experience in applying the robotic platform to other makes and models of car, including larger carrying capacity vehicles such as the Citroen C4 or the Renault Scenic.
Faar proposes a ‘made-to-measure’ approach: test your software and/or hardware on one of their test cars, buy a fully-robotised Twizy from them, or ask Faar to implement their robotised platform on a vehicle of your choice. Faar’s experience in designing, testing and validating complex electric-electronic architectures means that they have experts on hand to help at any stage of their customers’ own development process.
Faar uses Kvaser interfaces and dataloggers in its own development and test process, and recommends their use to customers. As Ksenia Duarte, marketing and communications manager for Faar confirms: ‘CAN’s role in autonomous vehicles is increasing. As you can see from our system model (shown below), the autonomous driving commands and all robotic controls are sent via CAN, so it is a [fundamental] part of the system.”
